EFWCPs first 30 years
The Epilepsy Foundation Western/Central Pennsylvania (EFWCP) celebrated its 30th year of
distinguished community service in May 2002.
Its an impressive milestone,’ said EFWCP board president Louis Testoni.
And, it is a testament to the many dedicated board and staff members who have devoted
themselves to making life better for those in our community who cope with epilepsy and seizure
disorders on a daily basis.
Reaching such an anniversary would only have been a pipe dream among even its most ardent
supporters when the organization was founded 30 years ago.
Yet, here we are three decades later forging ahead with programs and services for those
who need us most, said EFWCP executive director Judith Painter. Theres
still so much more that needs to be done, but we are all pleased that a solid foundation has been
laid to meet the challenges ahead.
Humble Beginnings
In 1971, a group of parents and friends concerned about the lack of services for persons with epilepsy
establish the beginnings of what is later to become the Epilepsy Foundation Western Pennsylvania.
It is officially incorporated on May 30, 1972 as the Allegheny Plateau Chapter of the Epilepsy
Foundation of America, and soon serves 15 southwestern Pennsylvania counties.
At first, the Foundation relies primarily on volunteer efforts, with Grace Krull as the first volunteer
executive director, to support a small information and referral service in a tiny donated office in
downtown Pittsburghs Union Trust Building. Fundraising efforts amount to selling balloons
and canning on street corners.
Several years later, a number of prominent community leaders join the founding families and begin
raising money to pay for programs and services through special events. Many of these volunteers
are still with the Foundation today and work tirelessly to raise funds necessary to support the various
activities of the Foundation.
